Donegal Golf Classic in aid of Alhzeimers

Friday 13th is not so unlucky after all. This was proved when the Alzheimers Golf Classic turned out to be a great success, with 52 teams completing on the wonderful golf links at Murvagh.
Johnny, his son Mark, and longtime friend Al Marquette were thrilled with the reception they received and the overall running of this very worthy tournament. This is all down to a hardworking committee consisting of Justin and Agnes Coughlan, Patricia McGettigan, Rosemary McGirr, Dylan Davitt and, of course, Tommy and Nora Gallagher, who are also the main sponsors of the event.
Thanks to their continued generosity, the Alzheimer Society of Donegal are €20,000 to the good which will provide funds to care for the sufferers of this illness - and provide comfort to their families and loved ones.
A special word of thanks to the people who made this all possible, Harvey’s Point for providing accommodation for Johnny and his crew; Tony and Sean Forde for the music on the night; McGinty’s Fruit; McAllister’s for the water; Timony Mouldings for framing the items sold at the auction; Larry Walsh for looking after the cards and presenting the results on the night; the golf club and all their staff, and, last but not least, Keith Anderson for once again being a wonderful auctioneer - thanks Keith.
Plans are already underway for next year’s event and we are sure it will be another big success, well done one and all.

Donegal Town and District Pony Jumping Event at Holmes
Show very much enjoyed on ‘brilliant day’

The 14th Annual Donegal Town Show Jumping Event took place on 15th July at the football field at the Holmes Beach, Donegal Town. Billy Graham’s field, as always, provided an excellent surface for our many competitors who travel some considerable distance to compete at the Show and who very much enjoyed not only a brilliant day weather wise but who were also quick to avail of the opportunity to “swim with the horses”.
Our sponsors are Abbey Hotel Co. Ltd; Donegal Creameries, Kelco Communications, The Sand House Hotel, Dom Breslin’s Pier 1, Harvey’s Point Country Hotel, Ulster Bank, Rory’s Auto Spares, Donegal Town Hardware & DIY; Roadstone Provinces, Donegal Tyre Centre, McIntyre’s Service Station, Glebe Builders, Killybegs Fishing Industries Ltd; John Barry and Seamus Sheerin’s Cooperative Stores.
Robert Ellis provided flowers and shrubs to enhance the presentation of the testing courses designed by Senior National Course Builder, John Chambers and Regional Course Builder, Seamus McCaffrey and, with Seamus Gallagher overseeing all matters of safety, the day began with the pony classes demonstrating that we do indeed have some very able up and coming riders.
Hannah Smyth and her ponies, Just Bob, Cogs, Jingle Belle Rock and Dans your Man, dominated the 128 classes with the McSorley family taking over in the later ones.
Michelle McCrossan, riding Braveheart Warrior, showed the way in the 148ABC and then it was the turn of the horses.
The horse classes were well represented not only by competitors from the island of Ireland but also from America and Germany. Many riders competed on several horses and are firm supporters of the show.
This year the Brendan Boylan Memorial Cup for the 1.10m was presented by Raymond Nolan to Kelda Morgan, riding London Jen, a horse bred by Patrick Patton in Ballyshannon.
Jimmy McCloskey won the Seamus Campbell Memorial Cup on Bally Diamonds Promise. The 1.20m winner was presented with the cup by Seamus Campbell’s grandson, Shamie.
