7th July - Lady Captain’s Day: Dorothy Woods hosted her Lady Captain Day in Murvagh on the 7th. The theme for the prizes this year was “Dorothy’s Room” - the centrpiece of which was a ‘love seat’ on a soft green rug surrounded by paintings, lamps, flowers, vases, cushions and a Colin Montgomery autobiography - a haven from the the stresses of life. The Lady Captain, in a well thought out speech, thanked her Officers and Committee for their commitment to the smooth running of the Ladies Branch, Ruby and Maureen for their spectacular flower arrangements and she welcomed her family, friends, fellow golfers and Lady Captains from Portnoo, Bundoran and Castlehume. She also paid tribute to the staff both in the clubhouse and on the course and the caterers for providing the sizzling barbecue for the multitudes. On a wind-swept course, Ballyshannon based Bernie Finn was the worthy winner of the ‘love seat’ with a 76 nett on a break of tie from Geraldine Gorman, one of our promising newer members. Two Club stalwarts Kathleen Fox and Marian Ward were in 3rd and 4th positions with 77 nett each. Mary Farragher will rue the bunker on the right of the 14th green which scuppered her chances of winning this year when she returned a score of 15 on this hole.

Donegal stutter past Leitrim

Cathal and Teresa Mc Gonagle from Donegal Town, and Paddy Brennan, Ardara, with Paddy O Donnell, Dungloe, to the fore in the crowd.

Donegal needed extra time to beat unlucky Leitrim by 1-16 to 1-14 in a thrilling first-round football qualifier at Carrick-on-Shannon.
James Glancy’s injury-time goal forced the extra 20 minutes but luckless Leitrim – still without a win in the back door - eventually slipped to yet another loss as Donegal progressed by the skin of their teeth.Michael Murphy’s 35th-minute goal gave the winners an undeserved 1-5 to 0-6 half time lead after Leitrim had dominated almost the entire first half.
Leitrim made a fine start with points from Ciaran Duignan and Fintan McBrien on four and six minutes respectively.Michael Hegarty (8) pulled one back but Duignan was on hand to restore the home county’s two-point advantage. Hegarty also had his shooting boots on, however, and his second point on twelve minutes reduced the gap to the minimum again. Declan Maxwell landed a cracker and the inspirational Duignan notched his third score to make it 0-5 to 0-2 to a dominant Leitrim with quarter of the match played. Duignan’s 25-metre free was the first score in eight minutes, making it 0-6 to 0-2 after 24.
Brendan Devenney sent a rasping shot inches over the crossbar when the goal was at his mercy after a blistering run through the Leitrim defence. Much to the dismay of the vociferous home support, Kevin McMenamin’s routine free closed the gap to two points on the half hour.
Just before the short whistle, Leitrim were awarded a penalty: on 33 minutes, Ciaran Duignan fed Maxwell who was pulled to ground with only goalkeeper Paul Durcan to beat. Centre forward Michael Foley took the spot kick but Durcan stretched out a boot to make a vital save.
Reprieved, Ryan Bradley popped over a Donegal point before Michael Murphy bulged the Leitrim net to make it 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval. Leitrim would have led by five if they had converted the penalty; instead they trailed by two.
The next four points were shared. McMenamin, Duignan, Bradley and Leitrim corner back Dermot Reynolds (46) obliged before McMenamin’s free made it 1-8 to 0-8.
Substitute James Glancy and Devenney traded points and the next two scores also went either way before Glancy slotted over his second to reduce the arrears to two, 1-10 to 0-11 with little over ten minutes left on the clock.
Leitrim couldn’t get back within a point. Frustratingly, they missed a couple of decent chances before Donegal restored their goal lead.
Dessie Dolan’s men were given renewed hope when it was announced that six minutes of added time would be played.
Amazingly, with time almost up, all Leitrim’s years of ill fortune were blown away when Glancy drove the ball soccer style to the net a full seven minutes into added time. It finished 1-11 apiece after normal time.
Rory Kavanagh got the first two scores of extra time for Donegal and Christy Toye grabbed the only other point of the opening period. The visitors led by 1-14 to 1-11 at the second short whistle.
Leitrim had taken off Ciaran Duignan due to fatigue in normal time but they reintroduced the big-hearted attacker and he registered two points in as many minutes – his sixth and seventh – to close the gap to one.
Stephen McDermott replied with a good Donegal point and none of the 12,000 spectators were leaving the newly-refurbished Pairc Sean MacDiarmada as two points separated the sides with five minutes of extra time left.
Midfielder Michael Duignan sent over his third point of an enthralling match on 85 minutes but Eamonn McGee hit the final score in the 90th minute for a relieved Donegal.
