A dedicated Inveraray Roman Catholic has been awarded the Bene Merenti – a gold medal from His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
Danny Kennedy was presented with the medal by Bishop Ian Murray during the Candlelight Ecumenical Carol Service in All Saints Episcopalian Church, Inveraray on Sunday 17th December 2006.

Priest
Mid Argyll’s local priest, Father William Maclean of St Margaret’s in Lochgilphead, said: ‘the priest or bishop nominates someone to get the medal. It’s only for people who do a lot of work in the church, years and years of daily and weekly helping out, they have to be very dedicated. Father Michael Hutson nominated before I arrived here. He got it - I landed it! ”
Berne Merenti is Latin for well deserving and the medal was given in recognition of Danny’s outstanding and long service to the church.

Thrilled
Danny said: “I’m absolutely thrilled about it. I was very emotional.”
The service was attended by people from all of the churches in Inveraray. Children from Inveraray Primary School sang and decorated the walls with drawings. There were readings and carols - and an address by Rev Brian Wilkinson.
Danny looks after the Episcopal church and its grounds in Inveraray, where Roman Catholic services are held weekly. The 74 year old was chairman of the Inveraray Community Hall committee for 40 years and currently helps out at the Inveraray senior citizens club.
Danny is originally from Donegal in Ireland. He came to Inveraray 55 years ago to work on the hydro at Shira. He met wife May at a dance and the couple will celebrate their 51st anniversary in February.
They have three children: John, who drives for McNaughtons in Lochgilphead; Denis, who works for an American firm in Iraq; and Mary, who is a caretaker at Dunderave Castle near Inveraray.
Note: Danny is a native of Donegal Town and the brother of Peter and Francis Kennedy of Marian Villas and St. Mary’s Park.
