New Library
Several expressions of interest were submitted recently to Donegal County Council for the provision of a new Library building for the town, and a detailed brief will shortly be sent out to the interested land and property holders.
This follows an announcement by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for 75% capital funding for the new building. Donegal Town Library has been the Councils first priority since the opening of Bundoran Library in 2003.
Donegal Town Library will be the main library for South and South-West Donegal, and hold a large collection of Local Studies resources relating to the area. It will work closely with library staff in Bundoran, Ballyshannon and Killybegs. The Library will also house reference and research materials, 9,000 adult and 12,000 childrens lending stock, public access to the internet, community information, newspapers and periodicals, audio and video listening/viewing posts, and provision for exhibitions and other community activities.
The Library in Donegal Town will be linked to all other libraries in the county via the Genesis Library Management System. The Library will host events throughout the year, particularly during the Bealtaine Festival for Older People, Heritage Week and Wainfest. The Library will be open full-time, including evenings and Saturdays.
The new Library will be constructed during 2007, and in the meantime library services are available in the Old Technical School on the Mountcharles Road.
Any item not available on the shelf can be ordered from another library in the county, or from another library in Ireland (www.borrowbooks.ie). Internet access is available for a small charge. The Branch Librarian is Rita Kerrigan and current hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3.00-6.00pm and Saturday 11.00am-1.00pm and 2.00-6.00pm. For further information on library services in Donegal, see our website at www.donegallibrary.ie, or contact Rita on 97 25329 or Helen McNutt on 071 98 29665.
Birthday boys donate money to charities
Eoin, Conor and Dermot Slevin celebrated their birthdays recently. They enjoyed a great afternoon with friends and family. The brothers asked for donations to charity in lieu of birthday presents. A total of €400 was raised and was divided equally between Our Ladys Hospital, Crumlin and GOAL. Thanks to everyone who made our afternoon very special.
