Bridie’s Closes

Best wishes to Bridie Monaghan whose shop is for let on Upper Main Street. Bridie is an avid fan of the Times and, if we were any way late delivering, she was on the phone wanting to know where we were.
All the best Bridie - you’ll be missed.

Burke's shop sold

Burkes Mace shop in Frosses has been sold. Its new owners, Denise Foy and James Byrne, Brocagh, will officially take the reins on May 5th. This family run shop is the last remaining of four grocery outlets owned by local families in the village - they were Kellys, Campbells, Timmy Kelly and Burkes – a sign of the changing times in rural areas.
In the early 70s Pat James Burke, his late wife Bridie and family came home from Coventry and purchased the shop which was owned then by Jimmy Meehan. They already had four children when they returned from England, John, Paul, Michael, and Des - Patrick and Anna Marie were born here.
The family ran a very successful business in Frosses, both grocery and hardware, and not forgetting the very popular ‘shop van’ which travelled the highways and byways of the countryside, for over twenty years, bringing provisions to folks who were unable to get into town during the week. Burke’s van was eagerly awaited by a lot of country folk on its midweek run – provisions were getting low - and the trusty vehicle carried everything from Woodbines and snuff to tea and sugar and the drum of gas – and whatever you’re having yourself. Kathleen Glenn celebrates 100th Birthday

Kathleen Glenn, formerly of Drumcliff Terrace in Donegal Town celebrated her 100th birthday recently in the company of family, friends and carers in Strangriff Nursing Home, Stranorlar. Kathleen was born on the 18th April 1906 as the eldest of four daughters to the late Mr and Mrs Bob Arnold, the resident blacksmith at Lough Eske Castle. She married the late Bertie Glenn in 1929 and, whilst initially residing in the family homestead in Lough Eske, she and her family moved to Donegal Town in 1956. She has been lovingly cared for in Strangriff Nursing Home since 2000 and is only the second resident in the home to celebrate a 100th birthday.
Throughout her life Kathleen has contributed enormously to the Irish Hand Craft Industry and was an accomplished embroiderer. Her most notable commissions were undertaken for the late Queen Mother and for the late John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara during the making of the Classic Film, ‘The Quiet Man’ in Cong, County Mayo.
Kathleen has four children, 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren all of whom joined her over the Easter Weekend to celebrate the momentous occasion. The Reverend Raymond Fox presented Mrs Glenn with a letter and cheque from the President, Mrs Mary McAleese, within which she expressed her ‘personal congratulations and sincerest good wishes’ on the very joyful occasion.
Kathleen would like to thank her family, friends and neighbours for the cards and gifts received on the occasion of her birthday. A special word of thanks is given to the owners and staff of Strangriff Nursing Home who have lovingly cared for her over the past number of years. - PIC IN PRINT EDITION ONLY

€1,000 - no bother to the Killymard faithful

When Fr. Francis McLoone made known at mass on a recent Sunday that Killymard church was in need of four new chalices, you might have thought that, at €1,000 apiece, he might be waiting a while to get them. But that would be forgetting the well-heeled status of the flock attending St. Marys. Within a short time of the announcement, the Reverend had been promised the necessary spondulicks “it only took two hours to obtain the finance” declared the Killymard Parish Priest.
