Post Office Retirement

Jimmy Mitchell, Ballyweel, Donegal Town, celebrated his retirement recently after 46 years service with An Post.
Jimmy is a native of Sligo but has lived and worked in Donegal since 1960.
On joining the Post Office in 1959 Jimmy worked briefly in Ballina, Ballymote and Sligo before settling into Donegal Town the following year.
In 1995 he transferred to Lifford as Head Post Master.
On the closure of Lifford in 2005 Jimmy returned to Donegal Town as Branch Manager.
His family, friends and colleagues travelled from near and far to join Jimmy and his wife Nora in marking his 46 years of service at a celebratory dinner in the Harbour Restaurant recently.
Among the presentations from his colleagues was a crystal football symbolising Jimmy’s passion for both soccer and GAA.
Jimmy was an accomplished player in his own right, and a brother of the Sligo soccer and GAA legend, the late Gerry Mitchell.

Gardai urge caution after spate of robberies

Gardai in Donegal Town are asking the public to be extra careful after a spate of car break-ins at church carparks throughout the county in recent weeks. They ask people to ensure that they do not leave valuables in their cars during church ceremonies, especially funerals and weddings. A local garda urged “Please lock your cars and leave nothing in sight - these robberies are happening all around the county and especially at weddings and funerals where there are large numbers of cars parked at the church. Please be extra vigilant and, again, don’t leave anything obvious inside that would tempt a thief.”

COUGHLAN WELCOMES GO-AHEAD
ON LIBRARY FACILITY IN DONEGAL

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., along with her colleague Councillor Jonathan Kennedy recently welcomed the decision of the County Council on the provision of a library in Donegal Town, which follows active lobbying on their part for this much needed facility. Following approval by the County Council under the Development Contribution Scheme, confirmation of the 25% contribution to the capital costs of the new library has now been agreed, with the other 75% from the Exchequer. Expressions of interest from property/land owners regarding the suitability of premises or sites will now be sought.
“We are anxious that such a facility be provided as a matter of urgency and call on those interested, to put forward their proposals to the County Librarian.” said Councillor Kennedy. He added that Internet access for the public should be provided in the existing library in 2006 and that the library will be added to the Genesis Library Management System. “Internet access is a matter of great interest to both young and old alike”, he said. Minister Coughlan concluded that she and Councillor Kennedy will be doing their utmost to ensure that everything possible is done to ensure that a new library facility is provided in Donegal Town.
