It was back to league action last weekend for the senior team with an away game against Glenree. The trip was not in vain as we came away with a 3-1 victory, with Fintan Doherty winning the ‘man of the match’ award with an excellent hat-trick, bringing his tally in the league this season to 11 goals.
Donegal went 1-0 down early on in the game, not for the first time this season, but Fintan levelled it half way through the first half when he rounded the keeper and shot home from a narrow angle.
Donegal had by far the better second half, aided slightly by the wind and their steady and patient play was rewarded when Fintan completed his hat-trick by the mid-way point in the second half.
This victory brings the team nicely into this weekend Ulster Cup quarter-final clash with Clonmany Shamrocks at the Hospital Pitch this Sunday afternoon at 1.30pm. This should prove a very difficult proposition for the lads as Clonmany are one of the top teams in the Inishowen League at the moment and had a very convincing 6-1 victory at Cappry Rovers last weekend. Donegal have been recording some impressive results themselves of late and with home advantage a very interesting cup-tie awaits, all local support would be welcome.
The Saturday team also had a very good win at the weekend, winning 2-1 away from home at Ramelton Mariners, who needed just one point from their remaining two games to secure the league title. This was one of the team’s best performances of the season and defied all predictions as Ramelton were sure favourites to clinch the league on the day.
Enda Bonner was again brilliant at the centre of defence as Alan Kelly and Kevin Haughey scored the goals to give Donegal a very pleasing victory - Alan’s goal in particular being a bit special from well outside the box.
This game was Donegal’s final game in the league, and, considering this was their first season back in the Saturday league for some years, manager Marty Byrne can be very happy with his own performance and that of the lads in securing a mid-table spot.
It’s back to cup action this weekend with an away trip to St. Catherines and we wish the lads the best of luck.
Killymard Utd/Donegal Town U-14 team have got of to a flying start in the South Donegal Schoolboys league with two victories.
First was the 4-1 victory over Eany Celtic with John Corley netting two and Declan McGroary getting the other two.
Their second victory over St. Catherines had a familiar ring to it with John Corley and Declan McGroary again getting two apiece with Liam Martin finishing off the scoring in a 5-2 victory.
This weekend’s game has been re-arranged for Sunday afternoon at Killymard against Erne Wanders and hopefully they can keep up their impressive start to the season.

There is very little to report this weekend although we had a full quota of matches on Saturday, with the under 14s and under 18s losing - but the under 16s had a good win.
On the senior front a very much under-strength Donegal XV fell to Randalstown but, in the process, they scored two very good tries. The first came from a kick ahead by Gary McGinty that he fielded himself. The move ended with Joe Taaffe being held up just short of the line. But from the scrum Vinny Murray got over and he added the conversion. For the second try Eddie Gallagher took a quick penalty in his own half of the field that caught Randalstown unawares. Eddie used his weight to good advantage to break through two tackles. And whilst he was pursued down the field by the Randalstown prop he showed a clean pair of heels to score in the corner. Vinny Murray kicked an excellent conversion.
As I said the team is very much under-strength at present, with a long line of casualties and we are dependent on some of the younger members of the club to stand up and be counted. On Saturday we had good strong performances from Enda and Shane Travers who revelled in the conditions and will benefit from games like this. In the backs Paul McInaw and Pauric McGlynn looked threatening on a limited supply of ball.
The supply of young talent to the team is testimony to the work at youth level by individuals such as Matt Wilson, Robert Morrow and Anderson Keys, not forgetting the contribution of Liam Brown who has refereed on a numerous occasions. We thank them for their selfless good work. Best wishes to Roy Irwin on his road to recovery. Also to Donal Martin, Gary Prendiville and Kevin Sinclair all of whom are currently on the injured list.
