Donegal vs Leitrim

Karl Lacey, Brendan Boyle and Stephen McDermott chase possession in midfield
Adrian Sweeneys last-minute point secured a 0-11 to 1-8 draw for Donegal against Leitrim in a National Football League Division 2A clash in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon. The poor Donegal performance allowed underdogs Leitrim a clear chance of victory after a 61st minute goal by Darren Duignan exposed some extremely bad Donegal defending.
Both sides had a tally of 5 points apiece at half-time but Donegal started to edge ahead in the second half. A late Leitrim rally and Duignans goal left Donegal 3 points down with only a few minutes left of normal time. A trio of quick points from Michael Doherty, Frank McGlynn and Sweeney saved red faces.

The game on Saturday was a much more subdued affair than the previous weeks match against Ballyshannon. No doubt the handing out of Prozac to the spectators helped to calm things down. But did they have to give Mogadon to the players? Certainly it was a soporific display with the side losing 23-3. Donegals score came from a Vinny Murray penalty.
The side had one other outing when they lost 23-12 to Cookstown. In this game Donegal conceded tries in the first and last minutes of the game. The Donegal scores came from Paul McInaw and David Barrett, with Vinny Murray putting over a conversion from the touchline.
Congratulations to Donal Byrne who was elected Donegal Rugby Sports Star of the Year and it was good to watch him on TV playing for Blackrock in the Schools Cup. It was nice also to see David McGowan, a young man with strong Donegal connections, playing for Ireland against Italy in the Under 21 international.
May I also send a get well soon message to Roy Irwin after his recent operation. Roy, of course, is a founder member of the club and our first captain. It was also pleasing to see Donal Martin out and about on his crutches.
Last Saturday we had Donal and Gary Prendiville down at the club, both on crutches. They were sitting on stools outside the clubhouse and looked like a pair of china dogs.
This weekend Victor Kearney leads a Donegal party off to Paris on an educational trip. I understand that Victor has pencilled in trips to the Louvre, Musee dOrsay, Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur. I believe there is a very fine Canaletto painting there that Eamon Friel wishes to view. If the party has time they may also take in the rugby game. I note the Irish team is being now togged out in Magee suits. Lynn, if you any extra auld suits or jackets, drop them down to the rugby club!
