Newlyweds bear brunt of Katrina’s aftermath in New Orleans

When Abbey Vocational Schoolteacher Michael Leyden and Jean Whitfield married in Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, on Saturday 20th August, they could have had no premonition of what lay ahead as they eagerly anticipated their honeymoon to be spent in New Orleans. Michael, who has been a construction, drawing and woodwork teacher in the Abbey Vocational School for 10 years, told Donegal Times what happened over the next week......

Ulster Bank to Move

The main floor of Cruagorm House has been taken over by the Ulster Bank which is moving from its traditional Diamond base to set up shop in the Main Street edifice.
Contracts have been signed and a €500,000 fit-out will start soon with a view to commencing business there at the end of October. The 4,000 sq ft area will certainly give the financial institution greater flexibility and scope to expand its services. The cramped quarters previously occupied will now revert (at a price) to hotelier Jim White who will appreciate the extra space this will afford him to expand his ground floor facilities.

Horrific crash near Ballintra claims 3 lives

Gardai have named the three victims of Sunday evening’s four vehicle crash at Ballymagroarty, Ballintra. They were Damien Quigg (49) of Finvola Park, Dungiven, Co Derry; Teresa Quigg of the same address; and Nora McGee (74) of Gortahork, Co Donegal.
Two cars and two motorcycles were involved in the crash. Emergency and firebrigade services from Ballyshannon and Donegal Town were quickly at the scene, among them local county councillor Jonathan Kennedy, a member of the local fire service.
“This is one of the worst things I have seen in my 5 years in the fire service” Jonathan stated, adding “nothing could have prepared me for the carnage I witnessed”.
A number of people were taken to Sligo General Hospital with injuries suffered in the accident. The section of the N15 at which the crash occurred remained closed Sunday night and most of Monday, waiting for a forensic team from Dublin to examine the scene. Driving conditions at the time of the accident were described as ‘very good’.
Gardai in Ballyshannon are appealing for witnesses to contact them. Any persons travelling on the N15 Ballyshannon to Donegal Town road shortly after 6pm Sunday, and who may have seen the collision, are asked to call 071 98 51102.
Fr Willie Peoples, PP, Donegal Town, interviewed on Ocean FM news said it was the worst accident scene he had ever been called out to, a sentiment verified by Gardai and emergency personnel who attended to the dead and injured.
As of Tuesday morning, one person hurt in the horrific smash was still in Sligo General. This adult’s condition is described as ‘serious’.
The N15 road reopened to traffic on Monday evening last.

Local Fianna Fail activist shakes up ‘Questions & Answers’

Chairman of Ogra Fianna Fail, Michael Shovlin from Dunkineely made a spirited contribution from the audience on last Monday’s Questions and Answers. His attack on Fianna Gael leader, Enda Kenney, was only brought to an end when chairman John Bowman, accused him of being a paid-up member of Fianna Fail. However our man hung in and kept haranguing the Finna Gael leader until his mic was shut off.

Councillor O’Neill slates road works on Laghey/Ballintra Road

Talking on Ocean FM news yesterday morning, Cllr Barry O’Neill was scathing in his criticism of the roadworks currently taking place between Laghey and Ballintra on the N15. Over and above the length of time the job is taking, Cllr O’Neill contended that “no work at all has taken place in the last week”
He also asserted the road was being left in a “very dangerous condition” due to the absence of signs and markings - and that the work was been carried out at “the busiest time of the year”.
The Ballyshannon councillor said he had been trying to contact the NRA over the last 48 hours “Not wanting to knock the NRA or the Council, but someone has to stand up and be counted” commented Cllr O’Neill.
McWilliams, the contractors appointed, are understood to have sub contracted part of the work to Maxwells. A time span of eight to ten weeks was allocated for the work.

Frosses Notes

Good luck to Sandra and Kelly Meehan who have secured teaching jobs in Dunboyne, Co. Meath.
The Frosses Mountaineering Club took to the Eany Water on Sunday last for a trek from the Roose Bridge to Boneyglen Waterfall. The scenery along the river is fantastic - the only downside to the walk was that only one salmon was seen by the group.
The Golf Society had a very successful outing to Ballybofey and Stranorlar last week. Despite the rain the craic was mighty. Winners on the day were: 1st Vincent McCrea John Burke and visitor, Iggy Larkin. The prizes were very kindly sponsored by Mr James Harley. Next outing is on October 5th toMurvagh Golf Club.
Letterbarrow had a narrow defeat at the hands of Dromougill at home in Termon on Sunday. The whole pitch and dugouts are a credit to all concerned.
Pat James Burke is back in residence at the corner again. I’m told that the music is starting to flow nicely.
A very happy birthday to Kathleen Ward (Coughlan Avenue) who celebrates a special birthday around now.
