Raidio Na Gaeltachta Senior Championship
Four Masters 0-14 Glenfin 1-08

Four Masters advanced to the semi-final of the Senior Championship on Saturday evening last with a comfortable three-point win over Glenfin in MacCumhaill Park. The draw for the semi-finals then paired the Masters with Naomh Chonaill while Gweedore and St. Eunan’s lock horns in what should be a mouth-watering tussle between the two favourites for the title.
Four Masters started brightly against the men from An Ghaeltacht Lár and had early points from Benny Byrne and Michael Doherty before Leigh Herron responded for Glenfin. The Masters added further points from Doherty (2) and Benny Cassidy but Glenfin were thrown a lifeline on 21 minutes when Kevin McGlynn scored a scrappy goal when referee Seamus McGonigle waved play on despite what looked like a certain free for the Donegal Town men for a foul on Karl Lacey. However, Michael Doherty and Benny Byrne restored a three-point advantage - then Kieran Moy pointed a late free to leave the score 0-07 to 1-02 at the interval.
Michael McGlynn had the first score of the second period but the star of the show Michael Doherty knocked over four points without reply to increase the lead to 0-11 to 1-03 before a free from Leigh Herron reduced the margin.
Shane Carr and Kevin McGlynn traded points, with Herron landing another to leave just a goal between the sides with eight minutes left on the clock.
A major scuffle then broke out and Charlie Gallagher had to leave the field with a serious injury. Kieran Moy receiving a straight red card and Gallagher was replaced by Niall Cassidy. On the resumption of play, Benny Byrne and Stephen McDermott swapped points as Glenfin searched in vain for another goal but instead Shane Carr scored a fine point to calm the nerves of the Four Masters supporters. Leigh Herron had the final score of the game right on full-time but it is the Masters who go forward to the semi-final in three weeks time.
Scorers: Four Masters: Michael Doherty (0-8), Benny Byrne (0-3), Shane Carr (0-2), Benny Cassidy (0-1) Glenfin: Kevin McGlynn (1-1), Leigh Herron (0-4), Kieran Moy (0-1), Stephen McDermott (0-1), Michael McGlynn (0-1)
Reserve and Third Team News
Unfortunately, it was a bad weekend for the Reserve and Third teams as both were knocked out of their respective championships. The Reserves were defeated 1-10 to 0-07 by Glenfin while the Thirds lost in the Junior B semi-final by the narrowest of margins 0-06 to 0-05 by Gweedore on Sunday in Letterkenny. Donegal Town Basketball Summer Camp

Over fifty enthusiastic young basketball players took to the courts of the AVS gym last week as part of Donegal Town basketball Club’s summer camp. The campers were put through their paces working on a wide variety of skills in the morning, before playing in the camp little leagues in the afternoon. As the week progressed the improvement in the quality of basketball was enormous, although there was one constant to the week - the girls were always better than the boys. There were a number of impressive individual performances throughout the week none more so than Tamsin Lyons, who beat off fierce competition to win both the Hotshot and Dribbler competition. Declan Travers proved himself to be the outstanding outside shooter of the camp by sinking a three pointer from outside the arc to win himself a basketball, basket and backboard sponsored by All Sports. All players received a club T-shirt and basketball, hopefully these will be put to good use in the weeks ahead. Thanks to all the coaches who helped out, especially those who were there every day: Stephen Carty, John Kennedy, Paul McHugh, Gareth Britton and Simon Waugh. They were ably assisted by high profile guest coaches, including Manus Brennan, Paddy Muldoon, Charlene McHugh and Peter McGettigean. All involved in the club would like to thank Ciaran Twomey of Abrakebabra - without his extremely generous sponsorship the camp wouldn’t have happened.
The club intends to recommence underage training some time in the autumn. The county board are in the process of arranging a Grade Three Referees course provisionally fixed for the 17th and 18th of September, the venue for which is yet to be finalised. Final details for this course will be available at the club’s AGM, which will be held on Thursday 1st September in Pier One. The club are always looking for new members, whether it be in a playing, coaching, supporting or fundraising capacity. If you are interested in basketball, or if your kids are, then feel free to come along and lend your support.
