Jonathan Kennedy nominated to fill fathers council seat
At last Mondays Fianna Fail cumann meeting, held in the Central Hotel, members paid tributes to the late Cllr Peter Kennedy. His hard work and dedication to the town was acknowledged by all present - his many achievements a tribute to the esteem in which this hardworking councillor was held. Therefore it is fitting that Peters local cumann has unanimously voted to ratify his son, Jonathan, for co-option into the seat until recently held by his father.
Jonathan, aged 29, is Peter and Nancys 3rd son, and is engaged to Stephanie. They live in Donegal Town and Jonathan is currently completing his final studies and exams to become a paramedic here in town. As well as being involved in many local groups including Donegal Drama Circle, he has played for Donegal Town Soccer Club & Four Masters at all ages. He also enjoys trying his hand at a round of golf at Murvagh! Jonathan was a member of the Donegal Town Band from the start and is interested in motorsports and photography. Like his father before him, Jonathan is also a member of Donegal Town fire service.
Jonathan was heavily involved with his father Peter in canvassing at elections and, when people called to the house, he was always more than happy to do his utmost to help them out. Jonathan stated that his door is always open and that although his da has left very big shoes to fill. I will give it everything and even though its going to be a tough learning curve, Im going to give it 100%.
Jonathan continued Im young, but I was born here, and I can see whats needed around Donegal. I will work hard for the interests of the people in the Donegal Electoral Area. I really would like to finish some of the things my father didnt get to complete.

Laghey house gutted by fire
A number of Laghey residents had a fortunate escape last Thursday when a house on the villages Main Street went on fire.
The terraced house was destroyed by the blaze which broke out at approximately 2pm. One of the elderly female occupants of the house was out when the blaze broke out, the other managed to escape uninjured.
Three fire engines from Donegal Town, Ballyshannon and Bundoran managed to bring the blaze under control in a relatively short time. The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

Suspected skimmers arrested
Three non-nationals, believed to be Romanians, were arrested by Gardai on Donegal Town on Friday night and brought to Letterkenny Garda station for questioning on what Gardai believe was to be a major skimming operation on local ATM machines.
The men were in possession of laptop computers, fake cards for the ATM machines and other items commonly used for the skimming operation.
A spokesman for the Gardai told Donegal Times that the three men were all members of the same family.
Crossroads Dance Comeback
The next Trummon/Ballinakillew Crossroads Dance has been confirmed for next Sunday, 26th of June, and will take place in the local Orange Hall. The event has been moved forward from September to June as the local dance was traditionally held around the date of the longest day or summer Solstice. This years dance promises to be even bigger and better with dancers expected from as far afield as Germany and Pettigo. Music will be provided by Paul Gorman and friends. The organisers have also decided to include Ballinakillew in the event title to acknowledge the new location for the dance - and to avoid a major fallout between both townlands!
The dance is due to start at 4pm and those wishing to attend are invited to come a few minutes early to find parking. A traditional session and singsong is also been planned that night in the Country Inn pub with special guests. The organisers would like to emphasize the special inter-community aspect of the dance and extend a warm welcome to everyone. There have been rumours that a new local mayor will be announced at this years crossroads dance but, at the time of going to print, none of the organisers were available for comment. Keith Corcoran
