Community Games Update

The GAA County Finals

Donegal Town U-12 Girls had a very exciting win over Gweedore in the GAA Community Games County Finals in Ballyshannon on Sat 23rd April, 2005. Four teams entered the competition: Donegal Town, Gweedore, Bundoran and Ballyshannon. Donegal Town’s first match was against Gweedore, which they won after a keenly fought contest. Their match against Ballyshannon was a very tight affair, with great play from both sides. The final result was a draw. They met Gweedore again in the final with plenty of goals on both sides. The ability of the Donegal Town girls to take their points was the deciding factor in this very exciting game, and with Kate Keaney in top class form they won by 3-7 to 3-0. She was very well supported by outstanding displays on all parts of the field. They will go to represent Donegal Town in the Ulster Finals on June 18th in Armagh. Well done to all involved, and to their coach Pauline Brogan. The U-10 Mixed lined out against Killybegs in the semi-finals and The Rosses took on Letterkenny East. The Donegal Town team fought gamely and there was only a few scores between them and the winners Killybeg. In the other semi final the Rosses beat Letterkenny East. The final winners were The Rosses who will go on to represent Donegal in the Ulster Finals.

Donegal Senior Snooker Championship

The final of the County Championship, the David Hanna Jnr. Memorial Cup, took place on Thursday 5th May in Donegal Town Snooker Club. A large crowd gathered to witness a fine display of snooker between Johnny White, attempting three titles in a row, and the young pretender, the talented Johnny Connors. Connors took the first frame quite easily with a break over fifty and should have taken the second, only to be snatched on the black by a dogged Johnny White. Back came Connors to take the third by clearing the colours but White levelled matters in the 4th to take the score to 2-2 at the break.
Connors was in full flow after the interval and clinched the title by winning the next two frames in 20 mins. At 18yrs of age Connors becomes the youngest ever winner of the title, and is arguably the most talented player to come from these parts for a long time. At the presentation, great tribute was paid to the Donegal Town Snooker Club for hosting this year’s tournament and for the wonderful array of prizes on the night. Indeed none of this would have been possible without the support of our main sponsors namely SuperValu, Donegal Town; John O’Donnell of TrainerHQ and Bonner Engineering of Letterkenny. Best young player went to local lad, Niall Harvey - one to watch for the future.
Also presented that night were the League Winners, Ramelton A, and the Knockout Cup winners, Donegal Town A, who defeated a very young Donegal Town C side in the final on Wednesday last. Great to see two Donegal teams in a final - a testament to the good work carried out by the Snooker Club in promoting the game amoung the youth of the town. Well done everyone!

Abbey Vocational School Under 14 Girls
are new County Champions

Sports teams and individuals in the Abbey Voc School had a remarkable set of successes during the past few weeks. The schools Under 14 Girls Gaelic team had an impressive county final victory over competition favourites Scoil Mhuire Buncrana on Friday last while the schools 1st Boys and Girls 7-a-side Gaelic teams won respective Co titles earlier in the week. Fourteen teams - 7 girls and 7 boys - took part in the annual Inter-class, AIB sponsored competition within the school - the winning class teams representing AVS in the county finals. Meanwhile in athletics, AVS had numerous individual successes at the Co Post Primary finals in Buncrana

Under 14 Girls lead the way
The Under 14 girls team overcame a very good Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana, in a thrilling final at Newtowncunningham. The scores were level at half-time and at full-time, with victory only asured in a nailbitting extra time.
Buncrana started the scoring - going ahead by 2pts before AVS replied with an Emer Cassidy point. Then a Corin Cahill point and Rachael Crawford goal and a point- put AVS ahead with 10mins of the half remaining. Buncrana immediately replied with a goal to leave the score 1-3 to 1-2. Caoimhe Maguire replied with a goal for AVS. It was Buncrana who ran out the stronger team in the last 5 mins of the 1st half, levelling the game on a score of 2-3
Abbey started the 2nd half the stronger team with a 2 points from Elish Ward and a great goal from Emer Cassidy. Buncrana replied with a point before Caoimhe Maguire again hit the back of the net for her second goal, putting AVS ahead by 7 pts. Again Scoil Mhuire hit back with a goal and a point to keep them in the running as the game entered the final quarter. Elish Ward added her third point to put AVS 4pts ahead with 8 mins remaining.
Buncrana fought back and and levelled with a quick gaol and a point. The last few minutes saw the lead change twice - Buncrana going ahead by a goal before Elish Ward almost immediately equalised with a superb low drive to the net. From the kick-out Buncrana swept up the field and went in front with what looked like a winning goal. Then in the dying seconds AVS worked the ball up the field to again see outstanding full-forward Elish Ward equalise with a well taken goal.
Extra time was played with tired limbs and saw AVS dig very deep. Two Elish Ward points in the first five minutes gave AVS an extra lift. In the remaining time AVS dominated and added a goal - Elish Ward, and a point from Emer Cassidy.
The AVS girls were deserving winners in a game of end-to-end football where determination and the will to win saw them overcome a very strong Scoil Mhuire team on the day.Well done to all the girls and to an outstanding Manager, Mary Gillespie-McLaughlan

7-A-Side Co Champions
The annual 1st year Inter class 7 a side competition found seven teams representing each class in the school compete in an enjoyable ‘round robin’ competition two weeks ago. The girls winners 1C and the boys 1E were crowned school champions and went onto to represent AVS last Thursday in Ballybofey. The sponsors AIB and county star Kevin Cassidy were on hand to add to the occasion
In the county finals twelve schools were represented. The AVS girls in their pool had victories over Glenties Comp, Gweedore CS and Carndonagh CS - they were narrowly defeated by Magh Eine, Bundoran. In the semi-final they defeated Loreto Milford before an exciting final in which they defeated Gweedore who came through from their semi-final.
The Boys team had narrow victories over Glenties Comp - 1pt, Magh Eine , Bundoran - 2pts , Gweedore CS - 1pt and a 9pt victory over Carndonagh CS. In the semi-final, they overcame a big Rosses CS team, before coming up against Gweedore again in the final. This was an exciting game with some excellent football and end to end football. The game was even on 6 occasions with the AVS only pulling ahead in the final minutes with two winning points. Eamon Harvey

St Nauls notes

The seniors are still unbeaten in the league after recording another fine victory over St Michaels. The Reserves also had a good win last week, victorious by 5 points over St Michaels. They have won two games on the trot - hopefully this run continues. The thirds had no game at the weekend having lost out to St Eunans the previous week by two points. The minors defeated Bundoran in the league last week by a point while they face Aodh Rua next Wednesday. The under 16s play Naomh Conaill in the first round first leg of the championship on Friday evening in Mountcharles. They will play away to Naomh Conaill on Friday in the first round second leg. The under 14s are still training away despite the fact that many of the players are also under 12s and under 16s. Their league campaign gets underway on the 1st of June. The under 12s had a bad week, going down to Bundoran and Ardara by the narrowest of margins. Perhaps if they had some luck, they might have won both games. The under 10s blitz was cancelled in Ardara on Saturday due to the death of a local person. They played Naomh Bríd in a friendly instead which ended all square at the final whistle. Congratulations to Eilish Ward on playing for the County Under 14 girls team.
