Captains Drive-In Saturday 6th March.
The popularity of the current club captains was clearly evident on Saturday last at the Captains Drive-In when over 70 members and friends turned out in the wonderful spring sunshine.
The following are the results:
1st Marty McGarrigle(11), Ann Gillespie (25) 48 net. 2nd Peter Sweeney (24), Mary Talbot (18) 49 net, 3rd Dennis Kelly (12), Maire ODonnell (11) 51 Net.
Afterwards everybody adjourned to the club house for a glass of wine kindly sponsored by Fergal McAllistair, Donegal Drinks, and the scrumptious food provided by Greg & Irene .
Congratulations to both our captains for the well orgasnised Drive-In and the best of luck for the golfing year ahead.
The total amount raised on Saturday for Donegal Alzheimers was €680. Thank you to all the members .
Next Monday 15th March: Singles Stableford (National Breast Cancer) St Patricks Day: Singles Stableford 9 Hole.
Though Donegals Golf links at Murvagh is being rested for greater things later this year, allied with placing and sixteen holes in play, Peter Dohertys (21) score of 40 stableford points is exceptional
Pettigos Gerdie Johnston (24) will be disappointed to learn that his wonderful score of 41pts was only awarded the runner-up spot. The weather over the weekend was very pleasant, but John Greens will have to put up the defences again.
Mickey Martin (12) spent an hour practicing on Sunday morning and got the results on the course with 40 points and third place.
The founding members of the Donegal club were particularly sad at the death of one of their stalwart members, John P. Gallagher, who passed away recently.
John, who was later to become captain of the club in 1983, started golf in Tullycullion in the sixties. A renowned match player in his hayday, he was one of the first onto every team sheet.
Due to ill health he was unable in the latter years to visit or play his beloved Murvagh. We all know therell be no putts given in heaven and all at Murvagh will miss him especially those whom he taught that three up with four to play is fraught with danger for the unwary.
Hard luck to the Junior team who were defeated in the Ulster semi final on Sunday by a solitary point (See Match Report). Keep up the good work lads. The club would like to thank Tony Walsh for sponsoring 2 footballs for the senior team. Thanks also to Gregory McGrory from GMG Mechanical Services for sponsoring the bus for last Sundays game.
