Damage amounting to thousands of euros was caused to a mobile phone mast at Tamur, near Pettigo, last week.
The controversial mast was twice refused planning permission by Donegal Co. Council after residents expressed concerns about health implications. However the owners appealed to An Bord Pleanala and were granted planning.
Local residents have condemned the vandalism, - Mr Jude Boyle commented - I cannot condone this type of activity and I can categorically state that nobody from the townland of Tamur was involved in it
Gardai said the perpetrators were very lucky not to have been seriously injured or electrocuted as the mast contained telecommunication and electrical wiring. Damage amounting to thousands of euros was also caused to the perimeter fence which was badly damaged by the felled mast.

Spray used in Robbery
Gained entry by spraying substance in womans eyes
Gardai at Donegal Town are investigating an aggravated burglary at Drumlonagher on the outskirts of Donegal Town between 9.30 pm and 10 pm last Saturday week.
Three armed and masked men gained entry to a private house by spraying a substance into the eyes of a woman who answered the door at 9.30 p.m. They also sprayed a substance into the eyes of her son. The womans husband was also in the house and all three were placed in a bathroom while the house was ransacked.
Nothing was taken during the raid and it is not known how the raiders made their escape.
Gardai are appealing for any person who may have seen any vehicle acting suspiciously on the Ballybofey to Donegal Road around that time to contact them at Donegal Garda Station on 074 9721021.
Dear Editor,
The peace and tranquillity of the quiet Orbeg/Lacrum area has been shattered recently by some very unpleasant and terrifying happenings. A number of cars, in convoy, were driven up and down the road at very high speed with no regard for the safety of other road users. Cars were broken into, one car was stolen and a car was set alight at 4am on a Monday morning.
The atmosphere has been so tense that some people have been afraid to stay in their own homes at night and have gone to stay with neighbours. One elderly gentleman, living on his own, received a phone call around midnight on Sunday telling him to leave his house as he was in danger. It is not known if the caller intended to frighten him or not, but frightened he most certainly was. He was afraid to go to bed and sat in his chair all night, terrified at every little sound he heard, When a neighbour visited him next morning, he was still in a very distressed state.
The Gardai have been very vigilant in the matter. They have visited all houses in the neighbourhood, advising people to make sure their cars and property are securely locked, and warning them not to confront intruders should they find them interfering with their property. A house in the area has been under constant surveillance and it is understood that one person was taken to the Garda Station for questioning but had to be released after seven hours.
It is hoped that the perpetrators have now left the area but people are still very cautious, and grown men are reluctant to open their doors after dark.
The area is very pleasant and neighbourly where everybody looks out for each other and we would ask everybody to do their best to ensure it stays that way.
New name for town centre bar
Despite the best efforts of Donegal Times, our suggestion as what to rename The Voyage was not taken up, but we wish the new owners the best of luck with the title they have chosen. From now on the Diamond pub will be known as The Reveller.
Pilot Project for Rossnowlagh Beach
A team of four beach wardens will patrol Rossnowlagh beach this summer as part of a two year pilot plan being carried out by the marine and water leisure unit of Donegal County Council. A project officer has been appointed by the Council to oversee implementation of the plan. Funding of €769,000 was last year earmarked for the project from the Peace and Reconciliation Programme. Other aspects of the scheme will include zoning part of the beach and improving infrastructure and toilets. Visitors to the beach will be asked for their opinions and house holders will be surveyed in coming weeks.
