CLG Naomh Brid Club Notes

A very successful A.G.M. was held at Pairc Naomh Brid on Sunday 11 January for the forthcoming year. There was a very large attendance, which culminated in standing room only. It is great to see the level of interest in the club rising to such a level, definitely the highest for many years.
Mr Pat Sweeney opened proceedings by presenting a very in-depth account of the clubs financial affairs and again proved to everyone what a good job he and Eileen are doing.
Mrs Mary Gallagher presented her secretary’s report and noted a number of valuable points which culminated in her urging club members to ensure that the successes of last year be continued and built on for the future.
The outgoing Chairman, Mr Michael Gallagher, presented his report to members, noting the numerous successes achieved at both adult and underage level and thanked all people involved in providing the silverware. Mr Gallagher went on to thank his fellow club officers for their continued dedication. In summary, he thanked all the aponsors (whose financial support is greatly appreciated), players and everyone involved in making last year one of the most successful for a long time. The Chairman also went onto wish Eamonn McNulty success in Australia and thanked him for his contribution to the senior team.
Mr Jack Greene took the chair for the election of officers, keeping the large crowd controlled. Unfortunately the taxi that was suposed to ferry a number of our more experienced members to the AGM on Sunday ran into some technical difficulties encountered due to the weather conditions.
A number of motions were debated with a lot of views expressed by club members. Only one position went down to the wire, with outgoing senior team manager Dermot Gallagher narrowly beating his opponent by a couple of votes.
The election of officers went as follows:
Chairman - Michael Gallagher, Asst. Chairman - Mr Seamus Gallagher, Secretary - Mary Gallagher, Asst Secretary - Donal Corcoran, Treasurer - Pat Sweeney, Asst Treasurer - Eileen Sweeney, PRO - Daire O Cuinn, Youth Officer - Michael Quinn, Offigigh na Gaelige - Michael Gallagher, Registrar - Mr Pierce Ferriter, Executive Committee - Jim Mc Grory, Donal Mc Daid, Stephen Walls, Tommy Mc Fadden, Donal (Skimmer) Martin, Seamus Gallagher, Sean Gallagher, Field Committee - Donal Mc Daid, Jim Mc Grory, Sean Gallagher, Michael Gallagher, Tommy Mc Fadden and Donal Corcoran. Team Managers: Senior - Dermot Gallagher (Assistant and Mentors to be announced), U-21 Donal Martin and Padraig Rooney, Minor - Padraig Mc Daid and Declan Mc Cafferty.
Mr Michael Gallagher took his place as the Chairman for 2004 and expressed his hope that members who were missing through illness would soon be back.
Training for the senior team continues on Tuesday on the beach at 7.30 pm and on Friday in the Community Centre also at 7.30 pm. Any player unable to attend should ring Dermot Gallagher on 0872062237 /0749734050. Also any players willing to make a comeback are more than welcome.
Naomh Brid will be playing the Ulster Junior Football Semi-Final towards the end of January (exact details will be available soon) and all supporters are urged to attend. Club Membership must now be paid to Eileen or Pat and is only €20 for the year. It is important that this is promptly paid.
The Club Dinner Dance will also be held at the end of the month with the treasurer already reporting high demand for tickets. The Senior Team will be honoured on the night, with Junior Championship medals being presented. The Junior Championship Cup will be in attendance. Further details to follow.
Congratulations to Caroline Martin and her ladies committee on a very successful table quiz held in the Salmon Inn on Friday night with nearly 100 patrons in attendance. The date and venue for the next quiz will appear here prior to that date.

Basketball
Club Notes

Things are getting progressively worse at the moment for the club, with two bad home defeats in a row. Kilcar and Letterkenny All Stars have both emerged victorious in games which the home team really should have won.
DONEGAL 55 KILCAR 65
Donegal raced into an early first quarter lead, with Liam Travers and John Kennedy putting the finishing touches to a well controlled offensive. Unfortunately things went belly up in the second quarter as the defense struggled to control Michael Molloy Jnr. who orchestrated a seven point turn around. Kilcar stretched their lead by a further basket in the third, despite some good outside shooting from Paul McHugh and the aforementioned Travers. In a disastrous final quarter Kilcar ran away with the match. Terrible passing and poor shot selection effectively handed Kilcar the match. Donegal: Bill Collins (4), Simon Waugh (2), John Kennedy (4), Paul McHugh (14), William Timoney (2), Niall Timoney, Robert Timoney, Liam Travers (19), Cookie Meehan (10).

DONEGAL 31 LETTERKENNY ALL STARS 46
This was certainly one that got away. Donegal were in trouble before the game even started, as half the team inexplicably failed to turn up, resulting in one of the smallest basketball teams ever taking to the floor. Wee Garth Britton returned from his footballing exile to play the entire game and helped shut out the All Stars offense, ably assisted by Bill Collins and John Kennedy. At the other end of the court Paul McHugh was at his electrifying best repeatedly fast breaking down the court. Inevitably as the game wore on the home team were worn down. McHugh and William Timoney displayed their inexperience by fouling out. The All Stars began to control the boards and Donegal were left lamenting the absence of a big man to help out with the rebounding. Letterkenny built up a big lead in the third and despite a trojan effort in the final quarter Donegal couldn’t bridge the gap.
Donegal: Bill Collins (3), Gareth Britton (6), John Kennedy (8), Paul McHugh (12), Simon Waugh (2), William Timoney, Niall Timoney. Despite recent setbacks we still find ourselves in with a shout of qualifying for th end of season play-offs. If the season is to be salvaged now is the time to do it. Despite having a good turn out at training on Friday night last, only seven players turned up for the match the following day. The potential for success is certainly there, the attitude against Letterkenny was good and when the big men return we should be a match for anyone. It is not all doom and gloom as the Gods were smiling down on us at the recent cup draw, pitting us against Letterkenny heat in the preliminary round with the winners to play Milford, two teams which we have already been beaten comprehensively this year.
