Snooker Club Notes

Donegal Town ‘B’ team, County Knockout Cup Winners Phelim Brady, Justin Thomas, Jason Patterson, and Paul Thomas, Captain

KNOCKOUT CUP
In the County Knockout Cup, the Donegal Town ‘B’ team reached the final after comfortable victories over Ramelton ‘B’ and the Donegal Town ‘A’ team. The B team, consisting of Paul Thomas, Phelim Brady, Jason Patterson and Justin Thomas were now up against Northwest ‘A’, the match to be played in Convoy.
The team got off to a bad start going 3 - 1 down. Paul Thomas secured a frame against Gerry McKeever but Jason Patterson, who had been solid all through the tournament, was unlucky not to take the second frame off Pat Bonnar, losing on the black ball. However Phelim Brady produced some magnificent snooker to stay ahead of U-17 County Champion Johnny Connors and take his match 2 – 0.
Meanwhile on the other table, Justin Thomas held his nerve to tie with Simon Connolly one each. This brought the match to a tie. Obviously, the team had to send in the on-form Phelim for the play off frame which coincidently again was against Johnny Connors. This was a tense frame but Phelim put in a brave 22 to put him ahead going into the colours. After a few nervous misses by both players, Phelim sunk the blue and pink to take the frame and the Cup.

MULHERNS WIN PAIRS
Meanwhile in the Snooker/Pool Pairs, Niall Gillespie and Justin Thomas reached the final after overcoming the Bluestack Browne brothers, Fergal and Conor. Martin and Keith Mulhern earned a semi-final slot against the Voyage team after a thriller against Sean Faulkner and Martin McDonagh. This match went the distance, and in the final doubles match both teams had their chances but it went the Mulhern’s way.

JOHN GRIFFIN CUP
In the John Griffin cup, Kevin Mulhern meets Finbar McCarthy in one semi-final while ‘League Player of the Year’ Brian Heeney takes on the winner of Micheal Neary vs Shane Faulkner, all who have been putting in very impressive performances recently.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The club held the U-17 County Championship on Saturday 12th April. There was a good turnout and all the early exiters played in a Pool Plate competition. Letterkenny’s Northwest dominated the snooker, Johnny Connors won the final against Micheal O’Hara 3-0. Donegal’s Jason Patterson reached the semi-finals and was unlucky not to progress. Kevin Mulhern, Ciaran O’Reilly and ‘Best Young Player’ Sean Boyle all made the quarters. Meanwhile in the Pool Plate, Donegal faired out better, Cathal Mulhern beat Daniel Sheerin 3-1 to win the final. The club would like to thank All-Sports for sponsoring the event.
