Schoolgirls Basketball All Ireland Under-16 Qualifying Tournament Saint Catherines Vocational School, Killybegs Make History Saint Catherines Vocational School, Killybegs made the long trip to Killarney worthwhile last weekend when they qualified for the All Ireland Final in style, winning all three of their matches. Having exited the Bank of Ireland cup at the semi-final stages, just two weeks prior to this, the Killybegs girls played with great determination to secure a first final appearance for the school at this level. This win means that the school will be playing in the A division next year and great credit must go to coaches Stephen Carty and Kathleen Keeney who have put a lot of work into this side. Beat the Hosts St. Catherines were up against the hosts, Presentation Killarney, in the first game of the day and got out of the blocks early. Karen Connell came off the bench and practically owned the boards, scoring eight first half points which saw the Killybegs girls go in at half-time seven points clear. A poor third quarter, with St. Catherines missing a lot of easy chances, saw the Kerry girls come back, and going into the final quarter there was just a basket separating the sides. The Kerry girls continued to rally and with four minutes to go they took the lead for the first time in the match. Killybegs, to their credit, dug in and responded quickly, with Kelly Johnston and Danielle Lyster getting some vital scores to go on to win the game by ten. Excellent Team Performance Game two saw Saint Catherines up against Colaiste Mhuire from Cork and with both teams having a win under their belts it was a vitally important match. It proved to be an excellent team performance, with St. Catherines holding the Cork schools two main players to just single digits scores. Niamh McKenna hit some great scores off the break and with Kelly Johnston once again contributing twenty points, St. Catherines won the game comprehensively. The final match played was against St. Pauls, and with the Galway team already out of the competition, having lost their first two matches, St. Catherines won the game easily giving all of their panel a game. The Killybegs school now progress to the final which will be played in late March against Teresian Secondary School, Dublin, St. Catherines. Having been defeated by them in this years Bank of Ireland Cup Semi Final, the Killybegs team will be looking forward to a rematch and a chance to settle the score.
